With the rising number of cases in Manitoba, my office is getting a lot of calls and emails from constituents who are worried about how they can keep themselves and their loved ones safe. And I am hearing that staying safe means different things for different people.
For health care workers, it means caring for patients and ensuring their safety, while worrying about their own health and the health of their families when they return home after an exhausting shift. For seniors, it means worrying about going out to get groceries or accessing care.
For businesses, it means keeping their staff and customers safe, but also trying to navigate restrictions and keep their business afloat.
For teachers and school staff, it means cleaning and reminding students of safe practices, while juggling an increasing workload. For families, it means worrying about your job, child care, your family and your loved ones.
I hear you.
Our government has been working hard to help Manitoba through this second wave. We’ve provided close to 190,00 rapid tests and announced supports for additional PPE and testing, including 100 Statistics Canada employees to help with contact tracing. We’re funding a Canadian Red Cross deployment to support long-term care homes in Winnipeg. We also funded the 211 info line to connect you with government and community-based health and social services in your community, led by United Way Winnipeg and Volunteer Manitoba. We’ve also increased our support to End Homelessness Winnipeg.
We’ve provided additional funding for schools to support adapted learning spaces, improved air ventilation, increased hand sanitation and hygiene, and purchases of PPE. We’ve provided support for businesses to help them pay their staff and their rent, to innovate and to help them survive. We’re assisting Indigenous communities who are facing particular challenges in their fight against COVID-19.
I want you to know that I am listening. I am hearing your concerns about your safety, about your business, about your job, about your loved ones. We will keep doing everything we can to work with the government of Manitoba and protect Manitobans’ health.
We all have a part to play in fighting COVID-19 and reducing our numbers. Stay home, limit your contacts and only go out for essential purposes. If you need to leave the house, stay physically distanced and avoid crowded areas, wash your hands, wear a mask, and download the COVID Alert app. And, as always, support our local small businesses through curbside pick-up or delivery.
